A jury awarded Marvin Gaye’s children nearly $7.4 million on Tuesday after determining singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams copied their father’s music to create the song “Blurred Lines,” the biggest hit song of 2013.
Marvin Gaye’s daughter Nona Gaye broke down in tears as the verdict was read.
“Right now, I feel free,” she said outside court. “Free from ... Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.”
The verdict could sing doom to the legacy of Mr. Williams, a reliable hit-maker who has won Grammy Awards and appears on NBC’s music competition show “The Voice.”
He and Mr. Thicke are “undoubtedly disappointed,” said their lead attorney, Howard King.
“They’re unwavering in their absolute conviction that they wrote this song independently,” he said.
Mr. King has said a decision in favor of Gaye’s heirs could have a chilling effect on musicians who try to emulate an era or another artist’s sound.
“Unfortunately, today’s jury verdict has blurred the lines between protectable elements of a musical composition and the unprotectable musical style or groove exemplified by Marvin Gaye,” Mr. Iser, an intellectual property attorney who has represented numerous musicians in copyright cases said. “Although Gaye was the Prince of Soul, he didn’t own a copyright to the genre, and Thicke and Williams’ homage to the feel of Marvin Gaye is not infringing.”
The two singers Pharrell and thinke was sued in 2013 by Gaye’s children—Nona, Frankie and Marvin Gaye III.
The family “fought this fight despite every odd being against them,” Mr. Busch the lawyer of gaye's heir said after the verdict was read.
Mr. Thicke told jurors he didn’t write “Blurred Lines,” which Mr. Williams testified he crafted in about an hour in mid-2012.
Mr. Williams testified that Marvin Gaye’s music was part of the soundtrack of his youth. But the seven-time Grammy winner said he didn’t use any of it to create “Blurred Lines.”
“Blurred Lines” has sold more than 7.3 million copies in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. It earned a Grammy Awards nomination and netted Mr. Williams and Mr. Thicke millions of dollars.
During closing arguments, Mr. Busch accused Mr. Thicke and Mr. Williams of lying about how the song was created. He told jurors they could award Gaye’s children millions of dollars if they determined the copyright of “Got to Give It Up” was infringed.
Mr. King denied there were any substantial similarities between “Blurred Lines” and the sheet music Gaye submitted to obtain copyright protection.
Mr. Williams has become a household name—known simply as Pharrell—thanks to his hit song “Happy” and his work as a judge on the “The Voice.” He wrote the majority of “Blurred Lines” and recorded it in one night with Mr. Thicke. A segment by rapper T.I. was added later.
Mr. Williams, 41, also signed a document stating he didn’t use any other artists’ work in the music and would be responsible if a successful copyright claim was raised.
Mr. Thicke testified he wasn’t present when the song was written, despite receiving credit.
The trial focused on detailed analyses of chords and notes in both “Blurred Lines” and “Got to Give It Up.”
Jurors repeatedly heard the upbeat song “Blurred Lines” and saw snippets of its music video, but Gaye’s music was represented during the trial in a less polished form. Jurors did not hear “Got to Give It Up” as Gaye recorded it, but rather a version created based solely on sheet music submitted to gain copyright protection.
That version lacked many of the elements—including Gaye’s voice—that helped make the song a hit in 1977. Mr. Busch called the version used in court a “Frankenstein-like monster” that didn’t accurately represent Gaye’s work.
An expert for the Gaye family said there were eight distinct elements from “Got to Give It Up” that were used in “Blurred Lines,” but an expert for Mr. Williams and Mr. Thicke denied those similarities existed.
Gaye died in April 1984, leaving his children the copyrights to his music.

What seemed to many like a black and white ending to series two of BBC2 crime drama The Fall has just been thrown into shades of grey with the announcement that Jamie Dornan will be back for a third series.
The Irish actor's fate seemed all but sealed when villain Paul Spector was shot in the season two finale. The closing scenes saw him, apparently dying, in the arms of Gillian Anderson's police superintendent Stella Gibson. But the BBC has now confirmed that it's not the last we've seen of the serial killer...

The new McLaren P1 GTR will feature a steering wheel inspired by the one on Lewis Hamilton's championship-winning 2008 MP4-23 Formula One car.
Proof enough then, that McLaren is quite serious about the business of making the P1 GTR the best driver's car in the world on track. We can reveal the first official pictures of its interior today, and it's unsurprisingly quite spartan. And features a steering wheel that's now six years old.
First off, you should know that the P1 GTR is an even harder, more powerful version of the already quite powerful ‘standard' P1. It's combination of 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 and electric motor now produces a whopping 986bhp, 83bhp more than the ordinary P1.
It's currently undergoing dynamic testing at "a range of international race circuits", and these first un-camo'd images show off the cars aero and cooling updates, and the fact it looks like something from a Batman movie.
We also get a good look at the insides, and that wheel. As mentioned, it takes cues from the MP4-23, with the mode switches in the centre, DRS and IPAS buttons on the top corners, the engine start in the bottom right hand corner and a KITT-style ‘boost' button included too. All in, it looks bloody excellent.
There are lightweight DTM-style seats with motorsport six-point harnesses - specially setup for each individual driver - with a HANS-approved carbon fibre seat shell. And though it's pretty sparse inside, there's still air-con, a sure necessity when piloting a near-1,000bhp track racer weighing little more than a sports shoe.
Each P1 GTR owner will get a bespoke one-to-one driver programme to ‘optimise' his or her driving skill, at "the most iconic F1 circuits across the world".
Probably a wise move, considering just 30 are expected to be built, each costing somewhere in the region of £2 million. Be afraid.
This week has gone terrible at the BBC after it was confirmed one of its biggest presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, has been suspended from Top Gear after having fall-out with one of the show’s producers.

The news came as a huge blow to Clarkson who admitted, with some degree of understatement, that he has recently had a "difficult” last few months which culminated in him and the show's team being hounded out of Argentina after protestors took violent exception to the numberplate of the car he was driving.
Clarkson was put on what was called his final warning last year following a racism row after claims that he used the n-word while reciting the nursery rhyme Eeny, Meeny, Miny Moe during filming of the BBC2 programme.
This Sunday's episode was set to feature the trio - Clarkson with Richard Hammond and James May - getting to grips with classic cars such as a Fiat 124 Spider, an MGB GT and a Peugeot 304 Cabriolet.
They were set to take to the road and end up at a classic track day, while Gary Lineker was the "star in a reasonably priced car".

An 18-month-old baby was in critical condition after surviving the freezing water of a river in Utah for 14 hours when the car driven by her mother plunged into the river on Friday. The mother, identified as Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck, 25, died in the accident which took place in Spanish Fork, Utah.
According to the Spanish Fork Police, Groesbeck, from Springville, together with her baby named Lily, left her parents' house in Salem at about 10 p.m. and was traveling to Springville when the accident occurred.
A resident near the accident said he heard something at about 10:30 p.m. and checked but did not find anything unusual.
Spanish Fork Public Safety officers were dispatched to the scene at noon the following day after the accident was reported when a fisherman found the car in the river.
"The vehicle was positioned on its top and upon arrival of emergency services the vehicle was tipped on its side," the police said. "An infant was located in a car seat in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle. A deceased female was located in the driver's seat. The vehicle is a four-door Dodge passenger car," the police added.
"We were delighted to see the baby was alive," said Lt. Cory Slaymaker of the Spanish Fork Police Department, according to KUTV.com.
The baby was taken to the Mountain View Hospital by ambulance and later airlifted to the Primary Children's Hospital.
According to the police, the vehicle might have rammed a cement barrier on the bridge causing it to crash into the river.
The Utah Highway Patrol is helping the local police with the investigation.
Three police officers and four fire fighters were also taken to the Mountain View Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. They were released later.
Police said he called dispatch, and rescuers entered the river, turning the car on its side.
Groesbeck was engaged to be married. Police said drugs and alcohol were not factors in this crash.

The music world was rocked by the shocking news this week that legally-troubled singer Chris Brown is now the father of a 9-month-old baby girl. But one person was more overwhelmed than most: baby mama Nia Amey‘s ex-husband, who divorced Brown’s baby mama after he found out about the affair!
“It ain’t going to take a rocket science to figure that out. I got a divorce because Nia got pregnant by someone else,” Terry Amey told Radar.
Divorce documents obtained by Radar reveal that the Ameys married in January 2003, and “ceased to live together as husband and wife on or about January 2014.”
The divorce documents claimed that Nia was “pregnant at the time of filing” but Terry denied paternity and requested a DNA test. She gave birth to her child by Brown that summer.
“It might be a shock to the world being that Chris Brown is a father and now he’s going to have to step up to do right thing,” Terry told Radar. “But at the same time I’m a god-loving person and I have to forgive to give my message.”
And the message he wants to make clear is that his ex is not who the world thinks.
“She was young and she had obstacles and made mistakes and now you have a child involved,” he said.
“Social media is making it worse than what it is. But nobody is perfect,” he continued. “When you’re in this industry all types of things are going to happen. It’s not just happening with my ex wife – it’s all women in the industry. When you allow persuasion and [being] misled to guide you, things are going to happen. It is what it is. It’s a part of growing.
Terry and Nia also have a 13-year-old daughter, Zillah, who he wants to keep out of the headlines.

“My life does goes on. The baby being here and a baby taking nine months, I knew about the child. I did visit with the baby,” said Terry.
“I thought I could have been the baby daddy. …” he added.
But now that the truth is out, he said, “I’m not going to let this Chris Brown thing discourage me. I’m on their team, even up until today. She’s driving my car to take Chris’s baby around places and to the doctor. I’m still here.”

Pre-Holi
Prepare your skin for the occasion:
- Apply a waterproof sunscreen on your skin to protect it from the sun.
- Buy only natural colours which are skin-friendly. The best you can do is to play Holi with flowers and homemade colours so that your skin doesn't get affected.
- Apply a thick coat of moisturiser or oil all over the body. The slipperiness of the skin prevents the dry colours from sticking to the skin and will ensure that the colours come off easily later.
While playing:
- If you experience irritation in any part of the body, wash with cold water immediately. Pat dry and apply soothing calamine lotion. Avoid using a face wash.
Post-Holi
Once the festivities are over, try these methods for easy removal of colours:
- If the colours don't come off easily, do not rub or scrub the face over and over. The skin becomes dry and can also peel. One can use curd to soften the body and hair.
- Homemade ubtans like Fuller's earth and sandalwood powder are helpful to rinse off the colours.
- Prepare a paste with milk and turmeric powder. The paste works especially well for those with sensitive skin and will provide necessary nourishment.

Presiden t Goodluck Jonathan yesterday gave automatic employment and scholarships for post-graduate studies to 164 former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who served in 2012, 2013 and 2014 service years.
He announced this at the presidential villa, Abuja, during the 2014 President’s NYSC Honours Award and the flag off of the NYSC Hope Alive Programme to assist corps members who suffered permanent disabilities during their service.
Among those awarded, 55 persons were selected from 2012, 52 were from 2013 and 57 from 2014 service year.
The president noted, however, that the awardees who would be absolved into the federal civil service are those who were yet to be employed by their state governments.
Presenting the awards, Jonathan said, “I congratulate all awardees on your well merited recognition and honour. The entire nation salutes the determination, courage, discipline, commitment and hard work which you all exhibited during the service year.
“In line with our policy of encouraging our youths to always strive for excellence, including serving and prospective corps members, I hereby announce immediate employment of the award winners in the federal civil service, as well as automatic scholarship up to doctorate level in any university of their choice across the globe.”
“I urge you to always be good ambassadors of this great country and we shall continue to look up to you for greater vision and accomplishments”.
He lauded some banks for their corporate social responsibility and uncommon concern for youth development displayed through the offer of automatic employment to the awardees.
Appealing to other corporate organisations to emulate this laudable initiative as the expertise of these distinguished Nigerians should be utilised by both public and private sectors, the president promised to continue to accord priority to youth empowerment programmes by initiating policies and programmes that would focus on youths.
“A nation that does not build the youth is building a nation for disaster”, he added, even as he urged the NYSC to ensure that its efforts to establish the Integrated Farm Settlement Scheme nationwide becomes a reality without further delay.
Earlier, the director general of NYSC, Brigadier General JB Olawumi, said a significant aspect of this year’s award is the symbolic flag-off of a new programme by the scheme tagged, ‘NYSC Hope Alive Initiative’.
He noted that the initiative which is public and private sector driven promises to give hope and succour to corps members who sustained some form of disability during the service year.
Noting that the scheme has benefited from government’s support in the MDG’s War Against Poverty Programme, Oluwami added that “within the past couple of years, a total of 4,273 corps members were trained out of which 3, 706 were empowered to establish their agro- enterprise.”
He observed, however, that a major challenge of the NYSC “which impinges on its operations is inadequate facilities to cater for the increasing corps population”.

When I resumed as the Managing Director, I met a structured system on ground and I will like to build on that system and further improve on it through further awareness creation about the brand and its service provisioning. We will make our services available to Nigerians but cannot cover the entire country in a short period of time because Nigeria is a large country with huge population and vast landmark area. What we will continue to do is a gradual rollout process, and ensure we consolidate well in any area we roll out our services. We will continue to offer high speed connectivity to Nigerians with high quality of service.
What we are doing in the four cities currently covered is to make them more dense in terms of coverage areas. We are putting in more cell sites and increasing the density.

Competition is good, especially healthy competition that will bring about market growth, but price war is inimical to business development, because it will weaken market growth.

From my calculation, based on what I have read in the newspapers, government meant well for fast broadband rollout in the country, which of course is targeted at deepening internet penetration in the country.
Confusion and apprehension have gripped the people of Umunneato autonomous community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, following the discovery of the nude corpse of a lady in their community.
Investigation revealed that the discovery was made a day after the world celebrated the famous Saint Valentine’s Day, at Okwu village.
An eyewitness, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, told Vanguard that a close look at the lady’s corpse revealed bruises, especially around the breasts and private parts.
Although the witness did not completely rule out what he called a brutal gang-rape of the girl, he could not, however, identify the victim or give her actual age.
The witness said: “I am not too sure that it was a case of ritual killing because no part of the girl, on the face value, was missing.
“It is, to me, a case of brutal gang-raping to death of the unfortunate girl.”
The source said nobody knew how the lifeless body was dumped along the road at Okwu or did it.
Speaking also on the issue, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Leo Nwokocha, said the identity of the dead lady was still unknown.
According to the royal father, police stormed the scene soon after getting wind of the incident and removed the corpse.
The traditional ruler said he had no doubts that the police and other security agencies were on top of the situation, with a view to ascertaining who the perpetrators were and making them to face the full weight of the law.
The body of the girl had been moved to the morgue of Aboh Mbaise General Hospital.
No police officer at Aboh Mbaise Divisional Police Headquarters was prepared to speak on the issue, but only referred us to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem.
A three-year-old American boy has shot his mother and father with the same bullet after pulling a gun from her handbag, police say.
The incident took place in a motel room on Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico.
The toddler was apparently reaching for an iPod.
The bullet passed through his father's buttock and hit his mother, who is eight months pregnant, in the arm. Both parents are said to be recovering.
The boy's two-year-old sister, who was also in the room at the America's Best Value Inn, was unhurt.
Justin Reynolds told NBC News station KOB he and his girlfriend Monique Villescas were about to order a pizza when he heard the shot.
"The next minute I realised my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realised I was shot too."
He called emergency services and tried to staunch Ms Villescas's bleeding with towels.
He said: "I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on. And my son because I didn't know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying. It was traumatising."
Mr Reynolds has been released from hospital and Ms Villescas is in a stable condition.
Albuquerque police said the district attorney's office would decide whether the parents would face negligence charges. The children have been taken into care.

Al-Jazeera journalist Peter Greste has been freed and deported from Egypt and flown to Cyprus, bringing an end to 400 days behind bars.
The Australian ex-BBC correspondent was arrested in December 2013 and tried on charges that included spreading false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood.
Two other al-Jazeera men, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, remain in detention.
Reports said Mr Fahmy would be deported to Canada, but concern remains about Mr Mohamed, who holds no dual nationality.
Mr Fahmy, who holds dual Egyptian and Canadian citizenship, may be freed after having his Egyptian nationality revoked, presidential sources said.
All the defendants denied the charges against them and said their trial was a sham.
They were accused of collaborating with the banned Muslim Brotherhood after the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi by the military in 2013.
In their defence, the three men said they were simply reporting the news.
Mr Greste's brother Andrew said in a statement: "We're ecstatic that Peter has been released and we now ask if the world could respect his privacy, to give him time to appreciate his freedom before he faces the media."
Al-Jazeera tweeted that it welcomed Peter Greste's release and demanded Mr Fahmy and Mr Mohamed be freed.
Mostefa Souag, acting director-general of al-Jazeera media network, said in a statement: "We're pleased for Peter and his family that they are to be reunited. It has been an incredible and unjustifiable ordeal for them, and they have coped with incredible dignity...
"We will not rest until Baher and Mohamed also regain their freedom.
"The Egyptian authorities have it in their power to finish this properly today, and that is exactly what they must do."
'Relieved and delighted'
Mr Greste's release came after a long campaign and a series of hints from Egyptian officials.
In November, President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said he was considering the possibility of granting pardons to the two foreign al-Jazeera journalists. He had earlier signed a decree on repatriating foreign prisoners.

Then in January, Egypt's top court ordered a retrial of all three men.
Mr Greste's release was eventually confirmed by a statement issued by the Egyptian Interior Ministry.
The statement said it had been "decided to extradite Australian journalist Peter Greste... to his country today, 1 February (2015)... after the cabinet's approval, in enforcement of the Presidential Decree no. 140 for the year 2014 regarding the rulings on extraditing defendants and deporting the convicts".
An official told Associated Press the release had been co-ordinated with the Australian embassy in Cairo.
Mr Greste left Cairo for Larnaca, Cyprus at about 16:00 local time on Sunday. His brother Mike and airport officials later confirmed that he landed at Larnaca airport.
He is now expected to travel to his native Australia, where his parents Lois and Juris, and brother Andrew, are due to speak at 10:00 on Monday (00:00 GMT).
